This growing resource, which is the BBC's first move to offer free public access to some of its archive content, holds a treasure trove of interesting items already.
Check out one of Edward Mirzoeff's first films from 1969,
BIRD'S EYE VIEW, documenting Britain from the air with superb music plus words and commentary by John Betjeman.
BESIDE THE SEASIDE is a very fine example of a documentary style which is rarely achieved nowadays.

Another item worth checking is a television news story from 29 September 1950 called OPERATION PEGASUS which shows the setting up of the first experiments to make an outside broadcast from a plane using a Bristol freighter plane, the Giant Brabazon. The test footage of St Paul's Cathedral in London offers a glimpse of what was included in the programme, which was aired on 1 October.
Read about how this disrupted the television schedules. The technical difficulties on the test flights included effects of plane vibration on the camera, radio interference from taxis and lorries, and the transmission aerials breaking down or not having enough power.
