Consumer Focus, the statutory consumer champion for the UK, has recently released a revealing report entitled
Time to Change the Tune based on consumer research drawn from a sample of more than 2,000 respondents.
The report, which addresses consumer perceptions of copyright, has been released before the closing date (31st March 2010) for the second public consultation of the Gowers Review
Taking Forward the Gowers Review of Intellectual Property: second stage consultation on copyright exceptions. These discussions will be likely to influence the future shape of the legal exceptions to copyright in the UK which provide a defence for individuals and educational establishments wishing to copy the works of others without persmission (e.g. CDs, video, off-air recording, format-shifting and taking extracts from media for personal use under 'fair dealing'). At the same time, the
European Union is actively considering amending EU legislation. This is all worth watching.
