6th December – Dr Jamie Medhurst – Archaeologist or Historian? Researching the early years of British Television

jsm_200On December 6th, starting at 5pm in the Screening Room W241 at Weymouth House, The Centre for Broadcasting History Research at BU has arranged for a visiting lecture from Dr Jamie Medhurst of Aberystwyth University.

It has been argued by Gill Branston and John Caughie, amongst others, that researching television history is akin to an archaeological excavation and draws on archaeological rather than historical procedures.  Like many other broadcasting historians, Jamie Medhurst is inclined to agree with them!

This paper, based on Jamie’s current research into the early years of television, will explore the challenges presented by historical television research and will consider how we can go about recreating or interpreting television’s past with very little or no evidence of the output of television – the programmes themselves.

Jamie Medhurst is Senior Lecturer in Television Studies at the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies at Aberystwyth University. He is author of A History of Independent Television in Wales (2010) and is currently writing a book on The Race for Television: Britain, Germany and the US in the 1920s and 1930s which will be published by Edinburgh University Press in 2013.
