Following some three years of work by the British Film Institute and associated stake-holder organisations in the English regions, the Government has now released some £25 million funds to support three urgent film archive initiatives. The confirmation of this spend was made when Gordon Brown also announced, on 16th October 2009, the intention of Government to support the building of a new Film Centre on London's Southbank with a contribution of £45 million of capital funds.
The three strands of much-needed work to support archives in England which are being funded under this initiative are:
(i)
Securing the National Collection (building a new large scale film storage facility at Gaydon to upgrade the BFI's own facilities),
(ii)
Revistalising the Regions (passing capital funds to significant archives in the English regions), and
(iii)
Delivering Digital Access (creating a Union Catalogue of moving image collections in England and linking to digital surrogates online for public access).
